Tryouts are conducted in March, after Winter Training, when it is warm enough to be on the river.
During tryouts, girls are evaluated on cardiovascular and muscular strength using erg scores, running times, and other fitness measures. Most importantly, each girl has the opportunity get into a boat and row with her teammates. It is possible to have a athlete who just doesn’t feel comfortable on the water.
Safety is the first concern of the parents and coaches. Therefore, in extreme situations due to flooding and bad weather, girls may have a limited water experience during tryouts. In these situations, dry-land evaluations are used.
